Count It All Joy

Sometimes, I honestly get tired of happy people. Don’t misunderstand me. I am a happy person and I like to be around happy people. But sometimes I just don’t want to hear it. Sometimes I just want to be frustrated, or mad, or just feel down. Sometimes things happen in my life and I want to go mope around like Eeyore for a little bit. When I’m feeling that way, the last thing I want is for one of those super happy people to come try to cheer me up and motivate me.

“I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength!”

“Count it all joy…”

Those aren’t really the scriptures I want to hear. What I want to hear is “Jesus wept.” It’s o.k. to be sad sometimes. It’s o.k. to be down or frustrated, or even mad. We are human and we have real emotions and real feelings. Just because I’m a Christian doesn’t mean I have to put up a front that I am always happy, even when I’m not. Trust me, everybody knows when it is a fake attitude.  So, when things aren’t working out, you had an argument with your best friend, a rough day at work, or just in general life isn’t going the way you want it to go, it is o.k. to take some time and not be happy.

But too much of that is not healthy. When you feel that way, find a support person. Someone that will grieve with you, buy you chocolate and ice cream, and listen to you. But that person also needs to be able to say, “O.k. It’s time to be done, get up and move on.” We will have troubles and things won’t go the way we thought they should, but it’s o.k. These are the things that help us to learn and grow. These are the things that challenge us to do better.

So… to quote a scripture that I despise when I am feeling down, but helps me grow when I’m feeling better:

Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.

James 1:2-4

Now where did I put that Snickers (the Peanut Butter Snickers, of course). Oh, did someone say ice cream?
